The Winning Spirit Graphic

Much of America and the world has recently been captivated by the summer Olympics held
in Beijing, China. As is typical at each Olympic game, young people have once again demonstrated
an intense spirit of competition. Most of the contestants have diligently trained for the last 4 years for
a chance to compete against the best athletes in the world.  The prestigious gold, silver and bronze
medals have motivated participants since the modern games began in 1859.

I’m not sure what the monetary value of a gold medal is, but I am sure the dollar amount is not the
main motivational factor inspiring the athletes. The quest for excellence and personal recognition
is the driving force behind the grueling hours of training and preparation. While the tremendous
effort and ultimate reward is temporary, and has little to do with things eternal, I am deeply
impressed with the level of commitment, determination and persistence demonstrated by
Olympic athletes.

Michael Phelps, now heralded as the greatest swimmer and overall athlete of all time, has shown
a single-minded focus rarely seen in any discipline. I have wondered what we could accomplish for
Christ if we maintained such a focus for the next 4 years. King Solomon stated, “Whatever your hand
finds to do, do it with your might...”  If we could apply that spirit of zeal to our spiritual pursuits, we
would be winners indeed.

Perhaps we are reluctant to expend enough spiritual energy to defeat our spiritual opponents
because we may not receive personal honor or praise. Winning, for Christ and His Kingdom,
requires the humble attitude of a servant who is not interested in public recognition. Those
who run the spiritual race, and fight the good fight of faith may never be honored by their peers.
They will never receive a medal for their accomplishments. They will, however, receive an eternal
reward and special recognition from their Heavenly Father. Why not follow the inspiring example
of the Olympians and set some spiritual goals for the challenges that face us in the future?
Become a gold medal winner for Jesus!
