God’s word (II Thessalonians 5:16-18) gives us clear direction regarding how we are to live, and how we are to think. First it says, “Rejoice always.” While doing so may seem nearly impossible when we consider the many setbacks life can bring, it is not optional for the Christian who wants to please God. We all find it easy to rejoice when things are going well. That does not require a special effort on our part. The truest measure of our faith, however, is when we can rejoice even during difficult times. This is when we show how much we really trust God. I believe “rejoicing” is a decision we make one moment at a time that is primarily focused on our relationship with God, not the circumstances and situations of our lives. It puts a song in our heart that the world cannot steal from us.

Second, the word says we must, “Pray without ceasing.” This is not just a spiritual suggestion – it is a command from God. I feel it is closely associated with our ability to “rejoice always.” Those who have discovered the power of praying without ceasing have gone beyond duty or obligation to a realm of continual communication with God. They talk with Him on a regular basis throughout the day. Their prayers are not limited to an hour in the morning, or prayers before bedtime. We all have control over our minds, and we can engage our thoughts in prayer or in less productive thinking. What could be more valuable than spending most of our time talking with God and involving ourselves in eternal affairs?

Third, we are encouraged to “Give thanks in everything.” This may be the surest sign of Christian maturity. It is far more than a nice idea – it is the pathway to godly contentment in life. The Bible says that it is the will of God in Christ Jesus to thank Him in all things. To do so requires a firm belief that God will provide every need in our lives. It is a deep level of trust. The Apostle Paul was able to thank God during good times and bad. His relationship with his Savior was not dependent on his personal happiness. The Kingdom of God was more important to him than anything.

When we choose to thank God for every situation, while consistently praying and rejoicing, we enter into a new level of spiritual awareness. We become aware of God’s limitless power to work in our lives, and in His unconditional love for us. Imagine rejoicing everyday. Imagine praying without ceasing. Imagine giving thanks in everything. And then imagine a deeper, more vibrant relationship with God than you have ever known.
